Paying for Curative Therapies: Our Challenges in Addressing Medicine’s Solutions
The next generation of innovative therapies is delivering a lifetime of benefit in one fell swoop. Yet we, as a society, are unprepared to buy a lifetime of benefit all at once. In a column for STAT, Dr. Dubois outlines some creative thinking behind how we could innovate payment models to finance curative therapies for cancers and other rare diseases.
Spotlight On: Value Assessment
Value assessment remains an important and debated topic in health care policy circles, and NPC has a wide range of resources to help you understand this issue. Check out our video highlighting concerns about how existing value assessment frameworks are often used to generate incomplete, one-size-fits-all evaluations; our Guiding Practices for Patient-centered Value Assessment; and our previous six-part blog series explaining why the patient-focused lens our Guiding Practices brings to the value assessment debate is so important.
NPC Now: A Look at Our Latest Work
NPC has partnered with Duke University’s Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy to create a post-doctoral, two-year fellowship that seeks to bridge the gap between health research and policy analysis, particularly in the biopharmaceutical industry. We sat down with Health Policy Fellow Taruja Karmarkar, PhD, to learn more about upcoming research, bridging the gap between academia and health care stakeholders, tips for recent graduates, and more. Learn more in our Q&A with Dr. Karmarkar.
Research and Info You Need to Know
Health care policy experts from NPC, Kaiser Family Foundation, Harvard University, Duke Margolis Center for Health Policy, RTI International, the University of Chicago and the Dartmouth Institute weigh in on the pressing need to discuss health care spending in the United States and find solutions. The video is part of an effort among stakeholders to "go below the surface" and get at the root of what is driving health care spending in the United States.
Real-world Data in the Current Health Care Environment
In this guest blog post, Dr. Eberechukwu Onukwugha of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy's Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research explores the value of real-world data (RWD). Read the blog to learn how RWD can provide important insight for public health decision-making, regulatory oversight and, in some cases, provider reimbursements.
