Why Improving Patient-Reported Measures in Oncology Should Matter to Payers

How can payers advance patient-reported measures in oncology, and why should we care? Payers play a critical role in promoting high-value patient care, and patient reported measures (PRMs) and performance measures (PR-PMs) are key to bringing patient voices into value-based care and payment. New peer-reviewed research led by NPC and Discern-Health (a W2O company), along with co-authors Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, director, Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, and Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, director, Cancer Outcomes Research Program, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, outlines a call to action for payers.

The article, “Improving patient-reported measures in oncology: a payer call to action,” describes the current state of PRMs and PR-PMs in oncology, barriers to implementation, and actionable recommendations for public and private payers to improve the appropriate use of these measures in oncology value-based payment programs. See the summary on NPC’s website and read the full study in the Journal of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy.

Tackling the Real Drivers of Health Spending

In recent years, there’s been a lot of finger-pointing at various health care sectors over which industry to fault for higher spending and costs. While there is enough blame to go around, data from the Kaiser Family Foundation digs deeper into some of the primary expenses by analyzing 2018 health spending per capita in the U.S. compared to economically similar countries. Researchers found that outpatient and inpatient services accounted for the largest share of U.S. spending – totaling an average of $6,624 per person – while spending in other countries only added up to $2,718 per person.
