National Pharmaceutical Council to Host Conference on Measuring Health Care Value and Impact on Patient Care

(Washington, DC, September 15, 2016)—The National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) will bring together health care stakeholders on September 29 for a conference, “Assessing Value: Promise and Pitfalls,” to examine one of the most controversial issues in health care today: how to measure the value of a medical treatment and its impact on patient care.

Value assessment is a new and evolving field, with the potential to have a tremendous impact on patient treatment decisions, as well as on coverage and reimbursement decisions. Multiple assessment frameworks—such as the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, DrugAbacus and the American Society of Clinical Oncology—have emerged in the United States in response to several factors, including an increased focus on patient-centered care, alternative payment models intended to incentivize health care value, and public attention on new high-priced therapies.

“The tools and solutions we develop to move health care toward a system driven by value must be grounded in sound science and centered on the needs and values of patients. Well-structured value assessment frameworks that incorporate the full value and benefits of a medical innovation can help achieve this,” said Dan Leonard, NPC president. “It is critically important to get this right, and much work remains to be done before existing frameworks will be ready for broader use in the United States.”
