Robert Frost once said, “By working eight hours a day, you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day.” October 16 is National Boss’ Day—a time to show appreciation for your boss. To show gratitude toward our boss and his leadership, we decided to highlight National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) President Dan Leonard’s role in reshaping the organization. And since it’s Throwback Thursday (#TBT), we’re even including some photos from earlier in his career.

Dan took the helm of NPC in 2008, bringing with him breadth of experience from his years working in public policy, communications, and more recently, at America’s Health Insurance Plans. He got to work immediately, strengthening NPC’s membership base; increasing its visibility; and strategically focusing on critical issues for the pharmaceutical industry.

Today NPC has 21 member companies and a staff of 14. Dan expanded NPC’s research department, led by Chief Science Officer Robert Dubois, MD, PhD, and sharpened its focus on three core issues: individual treatment effects and personalized medicine; the role and value of medicine in the current and evolving health care payment and delivery models; and the optimal use of real-world evidence. The team publishes dozens of peer-reviewed studies and white papers annually on these and related topics.

Given his background in communications—first as a reporter in New Hampshire and later as a communications director for national political candidates—Dan recognized the importance of being able to translate and disseminate the research to stakeholder audiences to gain awareness. NPC now has an influential presence on social media; a blog, E.V.I.dently Today, that highlights critical issues happening in the pharmaceutical world; and the CER Daily Newsfeed® and E.V.I.dently, two e-newsletters that focus on evidence-based medicine, comparative effectiveness research (CER), health and productivity issues and health care payment and delivery models.

In addition to his management skills, NPC staff appreciates Dan’s good nature and sense of humor. “The secret to good management,” he says, “is hiring good people.” NPC would like to thank him for his dedication, and remind you to wish your boss a “Happy Boss’ Day.”
