Focused Session: The Impact of Shared Decision-Making on Cost and Utilization and Implications for Value-Based Care
Wednesday, May 12, 2021
1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. ET
- Theresa Schmidt, MA, Vice President, Discern Health
- Kimberly Westrich, MA, Vice President for Health Services Research, National Pharmaceutical Council
Research shows that shared decision-making (SDM) and patient decision aids (PtDAs) reduce decisional conflict and improve patient satisfaction. This session reviews results from a NPC and Discern Health systematic review of peer-reviewed literature that evaluates whether SDM and PtDAs also lower health care costs or improve utilization. The majority of articles reviewed (31/51) found at least one relevant outcome with favorable results: lower costs, lower utilization, or higher prevention-related care. However, since articles often included multiple outcomes, even more (39/51) reported at least 1 relevant outcome with no significant differences, and 18 found no significant differences in any relevant outcomes. Stakeholders pursuing value-based care should recognize that SDM and PtDAs may not guarantee cost savings. Some interventions could help patients elect more appropriate care and promote treatment adherence, generating long-term savings in addition to highlighting patient needs.
