PCORI Commits $156 Million to New Patient-Centered Health Research Studies

(12/3, PCORI Press Release) “The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has approved funding awards totaling more than $156 million for new patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER), as well as research to improve methods and strengthen the science of engagement in CER. PCORI Awards UNC Researcher $14.4 Million to Study Emerging Medications for PIBD Patients

(12/3, University of North Carolina School of Medicine Press Release) “The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute announced the approval of funding totaling $14.4 million to study new treatment options for pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (PIBD). The study, “Comparative Effectiveness of Emerging Medications in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease,” led by Michael D. Kappelman, MD, MPH, professor of pediatrics and epidemiology at the UNC School of Medicine, will leverage PCORnet® to generate real-world evidence to compare the clinical effectiveness and safety of off-label medications in patients with PIBD for whom anti-TNF treatments are ineffective.” Full

University Hospitals Awarded $7 Million by PCORI to Study Endovascular Thrombectomy in Patients Presenting Beyond 24 Hours

(12/3, University Hospitals News Release) “University Hospitals was awarded $7 million in research funding by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study Endovascular Thrombectomy in Patients Presenting beyond 24 Hours of Last-Known-Well. Amrou Sarraj, MD, FAHA, FSVIN, director of Stroke Center and Stroke Systems at the UH Neurological Institute, will lead the study, which aims to provide deterministic evidence of clinical benefit due to addition of endovascular thrombectomy to standard medical care in this population.” Full

Organizations Unite to Increase the Appropriate Use of Medications in Canada

(12/2, Canada’s Drug Agency Press Release) “...Initially formed in 2023, the Appropriate Use Coalition is a grassroots group comprised of health care organizations and public representation that is committed to improving patient outcomes and reducing risks through appropriate prescribing. The focus of the Appropriate Use Coalition is to share information and evidence, reduce duplication among different appropriate use programs across the country, and collaborate on key projects to achieve more together than could alone.” Full
