Experts Call for Action to Fulfil the Potential of Real-World Data in Research

(7/22, The Evidence Base) reports “...There is no doubt that real-world data (RWD) have long been regarded as a transformative resource for clinical research and health policy. By capturing insights from routine healthcare delivery, RWD offers the promise of faster evidence generation, more informed decision-making, and improved population health outcomes. However, as underscored in a recent New England Journal of Medicine perspective by Ali B Abbasi, Lesley H Curtis, and Robert M Califf, realizing this vision remains a challenge. Structural, technical, and regulatory hurdles continue to limit the utility of RWD in generating high-quality, actionable evidence.” Full

Value-Based Care: Misunderstood, but Making a Difference

(7/22, Mara McDermott, Modern Healthcare) comments “...Accountable care is real. Its results are tangible. But its successes are buried beneath jargon and policy complexity. That’s where these new competencies come in: They offer a clearer, more accessible framework for explaining what this work really entails. Those of us in the industry who are committed to value-based care must do a better job of telling our stories. But policymakers also need to better support the organizations doing this hard work, and skeptics within the system should invest the time and effort to understand what these terms actually mean.” Subscription Required

Prior Authorization Is Likely Only Going to Get Worse

(7/22, Fred Pelzman, MD, Medpage Today) comments “...Sure, there's probably still plenty of fraud, abuse, and overuse, and a lot of overprescribing, overtesting, and overtreating, but it seems pretty obvious that the restrictions that these companies put into place have not done anything to improve care, have contributed to patient dissatisfaction and provider burnout, and have not made a dent in the 18% of our gross domestic product that we spend on healthcare. Perhaps, instead of more thoughtless rules, we could design a better, smarter, and more connected health system, with a strong base in primary care, something that is equitable and available to everybody.” Full

Matsui, Welch Reintroduce Legislation to Protect 340B Drug Pricing Program

(7/22, Congresswoman Doris Matsui) “...Specifically, this legislation would: Clarify that manufacturers are required to offer 340B discount prices to covered entities regardless of the manner or location in which a drug is dispensed, including if a covered entity uses a contract pharmacy to dispense 340B drugs to the entity’s patients. Ensure that manufacturers cannot place conditions on the ability of a covered entity to purchase and use 340B drugs, regardless of the manner or location in which the drug is dispensed, including through contract pharmacies. Impose civil monetary penalties on manufacturers that violate these statutory requirements and prohibitions.” Full
