Value Viewpoint: September 26, 2025
(9/26, Kimberly Westrich, LinkedIn) comments “A new commentary published in Health Affairs Scholar explores the differing perspectives of health technology investors and health technology assessment bodies. For both, using resources optimally to improve population health (and thus well-being) is top of mind. On the other hand, they operate at different stages of development, use different quantitative tools, make different assumptions over time, and thus can come to different — and at times conflicting — conclusions. Finding alignment in areas where it makes sense, such as how time is accounted for in their respective modeling efforts, may promote their shared goals of maximizing the returns from spending and using scarce resources to improve population health most efficiently.” Full
ISPOR Real-World Evidence Summit 2025: Day 1
(9/29, Laura Dormer, The Evidence Base) reports “...[ISPOR CEO Rob Abbott] began by underscoring that RWE is transforming health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), and, by extension, healthcare itself. He emphasized the Asia Pacific (APAC) region as ISPOR’s top strategic priority, noting its diversity and shared challenges (e.g., aging populations and uneven system maturity). He framed the Summit as a deliberate return to in-person activity in the region, and an invitation to co-create regional strategies and solutions. Abbott linked the meeting to the ISPOR 2030 strategy, and ISPOR’s aim to be a science-driven, policy-influencing society guided by the vision of accessible, effective, efficient and affordable care, and anchored in transformative values and scientific integrity.” Full
RWE Is Growing Up, And Here's Why That Matters
(9/29, Dan Schell, Clinical Leader) comments “...Until recently, I knew ISPOR — The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research — mostly by name. When I sat down with the group’s Chief Science Officer, Laura Pizzi, MPH, PharmD, it was my first deep dive into the organization and its role in shaping how we think about health economics and outcomes research (HEOR). What I found was a pragmatic, global-minded view of real-world evidence (RWE); one that’s both hopeful and candid about where the field still needs work. Pizzi, who has been a member of ISPOR since 1996 and joined its leadership four years ago, sees RWE moving from the margins of drug development to the mainstream. But she’s also quick to note that the field’s challenges — data quality, trust, and regulatory clarity — aren’t going away anytime soon.” Full
